There are two glaciers from the Mt. Cook area extending toward the west coast that reach close to sea level, rare at this latitude.  These are the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers.  We spent two nights in Franz Josef village and took a guided walk a short distance up the Franz Josef Glacier.  The company guiding on the glacier is constantly maintaining the route up the glacier, cutting steps and fixing ropes to make it safe for us amateurs.  We were issued crampons to grip in the ice, but despite one of the pictures below, only our guide carried an ice axe.
