Our first stop on the north island was Wellington.  We stayed at the Cambridge Hotel here for two nights right in the center of town (we were bothered a bit by the noise outside at night).  We no longer had our own transportation, so we walked around town which wasn’t difficult at all.  We visited Te Papa, the museum of New Zealand, and looked at many exhibits including the famous colossal squid which is on display there.  Once we got tired of looking at exhibits, we headed over to the Wellington Cable Car (an actual cable car like San Francisco has), and rode it up the hill to the Wellington Botanic Garden.  We had a relaxing walk around the garden.  We returned to the museum later to look at some more exhibits.  And that pretty much used up our one full day in Wellington!
