After leaving Abel Tasman, we headed over to New Zealand’s west coast.  Our first stop there was in the small town of Punakaiki, gateway to Paparoa National Park.  One of the main attractions here are the “Pancake Rocks,” which were formed by a layering-weathering process.  On Feb 8, Patty went on a horseback ride and Steve went on a short walk on the Pororari River Track, which follows the river up a canyon.

An insect we started hearing a few days before is pictured below.  The cicada creates quite a lot of noise, and it was especially strong during February (I don’t remember hearing any in January).  Reportedly, the cicada makes the loudest sound in the insect world.
