Patagonia & Antarctica 2011

Sunday:  Deception Island

Our last day of Antarctica brought us back to the South Shetland Islands.  Here we entered Deception Island, which is a volcano with it's central crater filled with sea water and a narrow entrance called "Neptune's Bellows" for ships to enter the protected crater/harbor.  The volcano last erupted in 1972.  We landed at Whalers Bay, which is an old whaling site that was abandoned in the late 1960s after a series of eruptions.  We hiked to a low point on the rim called "Neptune's Window" for the view outside of the island.
