Our first tour from Mopan River Resort was the Che Chem Hah Pottery Cave.  This cave was discovered in 1989 by our guide William, who was then a teenager.  He now gives tours of the cave on his family’s property.  The cave is filled with Mayan pottery, intact as they were left when the Mayans abandoned the cave around 900 A.D.  We entered with headlamps, and the cave floor was slightly sticky mud.  Several steel ladders allowed us to peer onto ledges above the floor of the cave.  The last part involved some twisting and ducking and rope-holding to reach a large room with high ceilings, where it is believed that bloodletting ceremonies were held.

Getting to the cave involved a short hike, and after we returned we took another short hike downhill to a beautiful waterfall.
