First day with heaviest packs, and mostly all uphill as usual on the first day!
Journal Entry: First day of Big Pine Lakes trip. Drove down yesterday and camped in Big Pine Creek campground. Smoky skies from fires to the north. Got down to 44F at night. On the trail around 8:30, hazy views in the distance but smoke not really able to smell. Steady uphill following the creek, lots of day hikers and a few backpackers. Decided to camp at First Lake rather than Black Lake, got here around 1:30. Lake is glacial blue in color. Smoke not as bad now at about 2:30.
