Easy, relaxing day with a short hike back down and past Fourth and Fifth Lakes, then up to Sam Mack Meadow.
Journal Entry: Another sunny day, gusty wind is gone. Some smoke drifting into the area, but only made some long-range views a bit hazy. Got started around 9, quickly found the trail and headed out. Down to Fourth Lake where we took a long break chatting with an experienced off-trail backpacker from Arizona on a one-month trip. We took the spur trail over to turquoise Fifth Lake and took a lunch break. Then back to the main trail and up a side trail to Sam Mack Meadow. Found a campsite near the end of the meadow. Two other tents further down. Got here just after 1:00. Found a nearby creek with less silty water that flows into a silty creek. We believe the silty one is supplied by the tarn just below the glacier. Pleasant creek sounds here. Smoke may have cleared a bit but hard to tell. Tomorrow we plan to day hike to Palisade Glacier.
