With
heavy packs sometimes it's nice to start with an easy day. The
hiking doesn't get much easier than the almost-level stroll up Lyell
Canyon. Near the end of the day's hike we had some views of Lyell
and Maclure above the end of the canyon. The trail here is a
section of both the John Muir Trail and Pacific Crest Trail.
Journal Entry: First day of Lyell trip. Arrived at Tuolumne Meadows yesterday and camped in the backpacker’s campground. Started hike at 8:30 or so. Easy, fairly level hike about 9 miles up Lyell Canyon with about 400 ft. elevation gain. Lots of people on this section as expected. Arrived at the steeper uphill 2:30 or so and found a campsite uphill from the trail with water sounds. Afternoon to relax! Weather is great, breezy at times with just a few thin clouds. Tomorrow we head up to the Lyell Glacier.
