Patagonia & Antarctica 2011

Friday:  Vernadsky Station, Iceberg Alley, Port Lockroy

Today was packed with activities.  We reached our farthest point south today, Vernadsky Station at 65º15' south latitude (just a degree or so north of the Antarctic Circle).  Vernadsky is a Russian station for scientific research.  The hole in the ozone layer was reportedly discovered here.  We had a tour of the station, and visited the southernmost bar in the world, which serves vodka made at the station.  Nearby is Wordie House, kept up as an example of an early British scientific research station.

We had our first  zodiac cruise through Iceberg Alley, an area with lots of large icebergs.  In the evening, we visited Port Lockroy, a museum and gift shop run by the British.  After visiting these, we did a zodiac cruise around an area filled with small ice from glaciers.
