The first day was one of the smokiest of the trip. We couldn't see any of the nearby mountains around Mineral King Valley.
Journal Entry: First day of this year’s trip. Drove to Mineral King yesterday and stayed at Cold Spring campground. Started hike this morning to Franklin Lakes. Lots of smoke from “Rough file” up by Hume Lake. No far-ranging views today. Got to lower Franklin Lake around 3:30, found campsite. Hoping the smoke clears. Tomorrow we go over Franklin Pass and down Rattlesnake Creek.
