The
ferry is run by the same folks that operate the Florence Lake Store,
and the Muir Trail Ranch, a wilderness ranch about 5 miles in from the
far side of Florence Lake. This is a popular place for people to
stay for a week, as well as being a key resupply point for John Muir
Trail (JMT) and Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) hikers as it is very close to
these trails (they are the same trail through here). We started with lots of people, ferry was full of backpackers (total of around 10 people). Leapfrogged with them to Muir Trail Ranch. We then headed steeply uphill to our first planned campsite where the trail crosses Senger Creek. We were initially alone but three others arrived later to camp in the same area. This was the point where we planned to leave the trail and follow the creek to its headwaters. Journal Entry: First day of our annual backpacking trip. Drove to Florence Lake yesterday and camped at Jackass Meadow campground. Caught the 8:30am ferry across the lake, hiked up the valley of S. Fork San Joaquin River, then took the cutoff trail to meet the JMT/PCT. Followed it to Senger Creek crossing where we are camped. Didn't see many mosquitos during the day (but the flies were swarming) but mossies are pretty bad this eve. at camp. Saw lots of people today... Tomorrow we continue off-trail up Senger Creek. |
