Today
we left our originally planned route to Kaweah Basin and backtracked to
where the High Sierra Trail climbs out of Kern Canyon. We
headed to Moraine Lake, which sits near the edge of Chagoopa
Plateau and has views of mountains south of it (on the other side of
Big Arroyo), and also of the Kaweah range to the north. We
couldn't see much this afternoon due to the heavy smoke.
Journal Entry: Tough day today—uphill 2400 ft. to Moraine Lake. Left around 9, arrived around 4. Lake is low—I was last here in 1994 and it looks different. Smoke rolled in early afternoon and is obscuring view of all mountains around here. Tomorrow we plan to go to Big Arroyo cabin.
